Mocké brothers set their sights on the Freedom Paddle

 March 29, 2022

Fish Hoek siblings Dawid and Jasper Mocké have confirmed their entry for the double ski showdown looming at the Prescient Freedom Paddle around Robben Island on 27 April, eager to build on their tenacious runner-up finish last year.

The brothers are trailblazers for the sport of surfski paddling in the Western Cape, and with Jasper Mocké having won the recent PE to East London ultra-marathon, he brings a solid base to the tough 27 kilometre island rounding from the V&A Waterfront.

Last year the brothers ran eventual winners Hank McGregor and Josh Fenn close in a nail-biting two boat dice to the line, and older brother Dawid Mocké says they are eagerly looking forward to another keen contest on Freedom Day.

“I am relishing just being able to paddle with Jasper again!” said Dawid Mocké.

“Last year was a good one for us. I think we pulled one out of the bag and surprised a couple of the guys,” he said, while guarding against a repeat for their charge to try and claim line honours.

“Every year is different and brings its own challenges,” he stated, digging into his wealth of experience in surfski racing. “We always like to be competitive so we will give it a good crack.

“Jasper is coming off his win in the PE to East London, so I hope I don’t disappoint him,” said Dawid Mocké. ”I am feeling a little bit of pressure, I must say!

“He is looking forward to a big year, with SA single ski champs the week after the Freedom Paddle, and that is the trial for the national team.

“I am looking forward to paddling with him. We have always gone well together and we are just going to go out there and make the other guys work for whatever they get,” he concluded.
