What is the Prescient Freedom Paddle?
The Prescient Freedom Paddle is an annual ocean paddling race held on Freedom Day — 27 April — in Cape Town, South Africa. Paddlers circumnavigate Robben Island on a 27km open-ocean course, or compete on a 10km short course closer to shore. The race is open to all human-powered seaworthy craft: surfskis, stand-up paddleboards, prone paddleboards, ocean kayaks, ocean sculls, coastal rowing craft, and surf boats.
The event was founded in 2018 by Robin Tindall and has grown into one of South Africa’s premier ocean paddling occasions, attracting world-class athletes alongside club paddlers, beginners, and families. Held each year on Freedom Day, the race celebrates the spirit of the date — endurance, unity, and the freedom to challenge yourself on the open ocean.
The Route
The 27km Long Course starts and finishes at the Oceana Powerboat Club on the Cape Town foreshore. Paddlers cross Table Bay, circumnavigate Robben Island — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former political prison — and return across the open ocean. The crossing involves approximately 20km of open ocean with up to 5km from the nearest land at the furthest point, making it a genuine ocean endurance challenge.
The 10km Short Course consists of two 5km laps near the start venue, offering a competitive option for newer paddlers, younger athletes, and those not yet qualified for the open-ocean crossing.
Who Can Enter
The long course is open to paddlers who hold a valid Paddlesport South Africa (PSA) racing licence and an Open Ocean Proficiency or Surfski Proficiency certification. These certifications are issued by PSA-accredited clubs and ensure that all long-course participants are equipped for the conditions.
The short course is open to all disciplines without proficiency requirements, making it accessible to a wide range of paddlers including lifesaving athletes, junior paddlers, and those new to ocean racing.

Sanctioning and Governance
The Prescient Freedom Paddle is officially sanctioned by Paddlesport South Africa (PSA), the national governing body for paddle sport in South Africa. PSA sanctioning ensures the event meets national safety standards, that results are officially recognised, and that the race forms part of the competitive calendar for ranked paddlers.
Charitable Mission
Every edition of the Prescient Freedom Paddle supports two charitable partners:
- Operation Smile South Africa — provides life-changing surgical care for children and young people born with cleft lip and cleft palate conditions. The Freedom Paddle community raises funds to support these procedures for families who could not otherwise afford them.
- SANParks Honorary Rangers and Table Mountain National Park — supports marine conservation efforts in and around Table Bay, protecting the ocean environment that makes the race possible.
Title Sponsor
The event is proudly supported by Prescient Investment Management, a leading South African investment management firm. Prescient’s long-term commitment to the race has enabled it to grow in scale, safety infrastructure, and prize money each year.
