Freedom Paddle Doubles Series presented by Dunlop Results 2020
Race 1
Race 1 was an honest effort. Race day brought a light to moderate NW to Hout Bay. 55 paddlers took on the fascinating 16km course.
The first leg was a downwind run to Noordhoek beach. Ian Trautman and Mike Machlalan stamped their authority on the race and surged ahead.
The second leg was an upwind slog to Seal Island under the majestic cliffs of The Sentinal. There were multiple options to round the island depending on how brave you were. The chasing bunch came together here with a slight reshuffle as some of the braver crews caught up with chancy lines through the rocks around the island.
The 3rd leg was across Hout Bay to Chapmans Peak. Spotting the pink turn bouy was tough. The biggest casualties were Ian and Mike who were way ahead but missed the mark and slipped back in the field. The upwind grind to the finish was a gut busting duel between Crispin Thompson / Peter Van Der Merwe and the mixed doubles combo of Scheepers Schoeman and Melanie Van Niekerk. Scheepers and Melanie took the sprint up the back to claim pole position.
